Diversity is the result of different groups having different identities within a state; for example, Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland are both Irish, yet they base their identities on religion also.
A diverse society has at least two of these types of groups.
New Zealand is another example of a diverse society, as we have many people with different ethnicities living here, and, for the most part, there is little striffe with the different ethnicities being the cause. However, there are instances every now and then, with groups like the Maori Party, and other factions that push for land to be handed back to the Iwi it came from, such as the seabeds, and foreshores. And some national parks and stuff.
Division
Divison in society occurs when identities are formed with what makes them different as the main point, for example, Catholics in Ireland would probably see themselves as Catholic Irish, rather than Irish Catholics.
Division typically occurs when there is history between the different communities.
For a society to be divided, these identities must be politically salient - they must influence the way they vote, what parties they belong to, etc.
